Dice Game – French Passé Composé with Être and Avoir – Jeu de Dés

This is an easy to play 30 minute dice game to practice the French passé composé using être and avoir as helping verbs.  I’ll explain exactly how it works and why students love it in this short video.

My high school and middle school students love this game, and it can get very competitive if you decide to play it as a race (details are explained with the activity). This game is available in my TpT store.

How to play:

Students divide up into teams and play a dice game, the dice determining which subject and infinitive to conjugate in the passé composé.

Included with this activity:

– How to play
– Five different versions of the game with answers
– Student response and scoring sheet

This game is also part of my money saving French Passé Composé Bundle – Être ou Avoir?

This dice game is an especially fun way to practice while learning about the passé composé. More advanced students also benefit from the review.

Materials needed

    • 2 dice per group
    • Timer
    • One student response sheet per student (included)
    • One pen or pencil per student
    • Individual whiteboards and markers may replace the paper and pen version
    • One “leader page” per student (included)

How to play

  • Team leader rolls the dice one at a time after the other  The 1st die indicates the number of the subject that will be used.
  • The 2nd die indicates the expression to be identified and conjugated accordingly.
  • 5 sets of games are included with most of these activities.  Use a different set with every round played.  Choose the tense you want to play with.
  • Students within individual groups play against each other and not against other groups in class. Players must conjugate the infinitive with the indicated subject in the chosen tense.
  • Every player tries to score more points than the other.   Groups decide for themselves if this is a race.  My students are very competitive and like the challenge.

Here’s what teachers are saying about this passé composé dice game:

My students really enjoyed this game, and as I walked around the room the groups had great dialogue happening as they helped each other. I saw a few students take a leadership role in their groups that I hadn’t expected. Great practice activity. Merci!

My French 2 students loved this! Great review before a test.

Great engagement activity!

Merci! Always looking for fun ways to teach and practice the passé composé!

I played this with my Junior students last year – they love dice games!

All of my French dice games are included in a money saving GROWING BUNDLE.

French Dictation Exercise – Dictée – Parler de son enfance

This is a beginner level dictée with the following theme: Parler de son enfance

french dictee

Included:

➯ Video presentation of the dictée. Watch me and listen as I read each sentence two times slowly enough to understand and write at the same time. Many non-natives find it makes the listening comprehension part of dictation exercises more manageable to see the speaker’s mouth. Once I’ve finished reading the dictation, I will present each written sentence in French along with the English translation. Once we’ve gone through all of the sentences and students have checked their work, I will present the complete text in paragraph form on the screen. At that time, we can slowly read through the complete text together so they can see how the separate sentences actually form a short story.

➯ Audio presentation of the dictée. Listen as I read each sentence two times slowly enough to understand and write at the same time. This version of the exercise will be more challenging as students will not see the speaker’s mouth.

➯ PDF of the numbered sentences in the dictée and the English translation.

➯ Numbered student response sheet. This is located on page 2 of the PDF.

“Dictation is the transcription of spoken text: one person who is “dictating” speaks and another who is “taking dictation” writes down the words as they are spoken. Among speakers of several languages, dictation is used as a test of language skill, similar to spelling bees in the English-speaking world.”

Les Loisirs – French 20 questions game – No prep speaking activity

Les Loisirs – French 20 questions game – No prep speaking activity

The game of 20 questions is a fun and effective way to practice forming French questions. This version of the game focuses on 52 nouns and verbs which are all about the les loisirs / hobbies / pastimes.

This game work for any level as it is written in French and English. Want a real challenge for your upper levels or immersion students? Use the French only version!

Click here to visit and follow my store

Included:

1 version with vocabulary written in French and English

1 version with vocabulary written in French only

Have students work in small groups of 2-4 or project the game and use it as a whole class activity.

This game includes 52 words. Many of the words may be new to your students as this game is meant not only to practice forming questions, but also to build vocabulary. I like to allow my students to look at the game chart while they play until they’re somewhat familiar with the words. After they’ve played the games a few times looking at the French-English version they feel more prepared to move on to the French only version.

One student in the small group or class chooses a word on the chart. Other students ask up to 20 questions trying to guess the secret word.

The student who has chosen the secret word can answer using the following responses: OUI – NON – PARFOIS – RAREMENT – GÉNÉRALEMENT – PEUT-ÊTRE – CELA DÉPEND – PROBABLEMENT

Alternative game play:

To change up the game and to make it more challenging as well as practicing other skills, have the student who chooses the secret word describe it to others in the group. Instead of asking questions about the secret word, other students listen to the description and guess it.
